How to Use Castor Oil Packs

Castor Oil Packs are a delightfully basic, time proven method of encouraging detox, promoting bowel movements, and inspiring healing. Creating a castor oil pack is easy and cost effective. Only a few supplies are necessary, and you may already have some of them in your home!

Supplies:

  • Organic Castor Oil

  • Wool or Flannel Cloth (large enough to cover approximately 6” x 4” when folded 4 times)

  • Large Towel (optional)

  • Heat source like hot water bottle or heating pad (optional but recommended)

How to:

  1. Fold cloth into a size approximately 6”x4” (or size of area you are working to heal)

  2. Pour castor oil onto middle of cloth. Cloth does not need to be saturated, use 4-6 tbsp

  3. Lay down on your back and place cloth oil-side down onto desired area (liver, general abdomen, a scar, etc.)

  4. Place large towel on top (optional - helps with cleanliness)

  5. Place hot water bottle or heating pad on top (optional - encourages transmission across skin)

  6. Leave in place for 45-60 minutes. Optimally, use the time to relax, which will help with the detox/healing process.

This same castor oil pack can be used numerous times. Keep in a sealed container in the refrigerator and use for up to 3 months.

It is generally recommended to repeat this process for 3 consecutive days, take a break for 4 days, then repeat. When determining how often to do it for yourself, listen to your body. Some people may need to start with only 1 day per week, some can start with 4. Those with digestive disorders such as Crohn’s disease or chronic diarrhea should start with 10-15 minutes. First consult your midwife or other provider before doing castor oil packs if pregnant or unsure if a castor oil pack is right for you.
