What is science? Science is exploring questions and trying to find out what is true as a principle. Searching for the answer as truth. Science is not manipulating the data to support your cause. If you are not allowed to question something, it is not science. When a principle is true it is always true.
Who Can Do Science? Science can be done by doctors and graduate students, yes. However, we all can use the scientific method. There is no reason why science needs to be left to the doctors and scholars of the world. You may say that you do not have access to the same data, which is true to a certain extent. It is very rare that a study will be published with falsified data, even if the conclusion is biased. You can go to the actual data from a study and analyze it yourself.
Why are we talking about the Scientific Method? The scientific method helps us to search for the truth, and helps us to avoid observation bias.
The 6 Steps Of The Scientific Method:
#1. You are curious about something and you ask a question. For instance, why do you sleep better on Friday nights instead of Sunday nights.
#2. Research so that you can start understanding your subject. Do you eat dinner at different times, consume alcohol, work shifts on Sundays?
#3. Create a hypothesis or an educated guess based on your research. Could alcohol consumption be affecting your sleep? Could it be your work schedule?
#4. Design and conduct an experiment. Maybe you give up alcohol for a month, change your work schedule or reschedule dinner time.
#5. Analyze the results., that’s what statistics are. This is a very important step, so that you can understand your experiment.
#6. Draw your conclusion, and decide whether your hypothesis is valid or not. If your hypothesis is wrong, you create a new hypothesis and start at step #3 again.
What is true? Science is exploring questions and trying to find out what is true as a principle. It needs to be demonstratable, repeatable and observable. When your hypothesis is correct you will find your results to be:
Demonstratable means that if a theory is correct you can create an experiment or situation to demonstrate consistent results proving your theory.
Repeatable means that no matter how many times you repeat an observation or experiment, you will get the same results. If your results are not repeatable, you cannot claim your hypothesis to be valid.
Observable means that you can see or otherwise observe something that happens. Sometimes observation uses special tools, but often it can be observed by anyone.
